Hack Heavy Periods without a Hysterectomy or Drugs
Are you wondering how to hack heavy periods without a hysterectomy or drugs?
Updated November 12 2023
Heavy periods stole my peace and energy for a long time. They caused me to feel anxiety and panic and I was desperate for anything to work. I was also frustrated that my body wasn’t cooperating. Heavy periods can be isolating because you can’t plan well for social events when you know your period is coming and you feel so exhausted. In this post, you’ll learn the common root causes and how to hack heavy periods holistically.
Many doctors dismiss heavy periods and medical treatments offered to control symptoms like the pill, IUD, surgery, or other drugs can have unpleasant side effects or may not work in the long term. In this post, you’ll learn about possible root causes of heavy periods and how to heal your body naturally, so you can start hacking heavy periods without a hysterectomy or drugs.
In all the workshops I’ve taught on heavy periods, there have always been women who thought that their heavy bleeding was normal or that they just had to deal with it. Heavy bleeding is not normal, and no one should be made to feel ashamed to talk about it.
Common and Root Causes of Heavy Periods
Common causes of heavy periods are:
- Adenomyosis
- Submucosal Fibroids
- Uterine Polyps
- Coagulation disorders
- Ureaplasma (bacteria)
- Iron deficient anemia
Rarer causes of heavy periods:
- Endometriomas (chocolate endo cysts bursting and bleeding)
- Cancer
- Thyroid issues
- Pelvic infection or trauma
Root causes of heavy periods can be:
- High acidity in the blood
- Congested, overburdened liver
- EBV (Epstein Barr Virus settled in the reproductive system)
- Low progesterone and estrogen dominance from overburdened liver
- Low grade viruses, and LPS and strep bacteria in the reproductive system
- Endometrial inflammation due to root causes above
- Cortisol deficiency in the endometrium from chronic emotional stress
How do I start hacking heavy periods without drugs?
If you’ve already received medical care from a licensed medical professional for heavy periods and are looking for more ways to hack it, keep reading! It can be overwhelming at first (it was for me) to make sense of the root cause of your heavy periods or to decide what to try in what order.
There is no one magic supplement for most of us that will instantly get rid of heavy periods. It takes persistence and consistency, as well as pivoting your plan when it’s not working. Supporting your liver, adrenals, and immune system is key to healing from heavy periods.
Has anyone noticed that emotional stress makes their heavy periods worse? It lowers your immune system which allows low grade pathogens in the reproductive system to cause problems.
Memories and experiences can be held deep in the fascia muscles of the pelvis. Emotion Code work is a great way to allow patterns and unprocessed emotions in the pelvis to integrate and release. On an energetic level, one question to ask yourself is, “Am I giving more than I’m receiving?”
Healing foods and drinks are key to any plan to reduce menstrual bleeding. Avoid these troublemaker foods: dairy, eggs, gluten, soy, corn, pork, alcohol, caffeine, and vinegar. Troublemaker foods increase pelvic inflammation and feed viruses and bacteria in the reproductive system. Eat organic as much as possible and incorporate lots of raw veggies and fruit. Top healing foods to target symptoms include wild blueberries, berries, lemon, banana, and fennel.
Supplements for Heavy Periods
In a study of 24 women with adenomyosis, the amount of menses (menstrual blood loss) after 3 months of taking andrographolide was significantly reduced. Andrographolide is the active ingredient in the plant Andrographis paniculata and has been used in traditional Chinese medicine for the treatment of inflammatory disorders for centuries. Research shows it suppresses the NFκB activation that causes inflammation. Alcohol free andrographis extract is better for your liver than an alcohol tincture.
Many women swear by the natural supplement Slow Flow. I have found it helps reduce the flow for some but not others. If you haven’t tried it, it’s a good place to start.
Organic Teas
Drink organic nettle tea and red raspberry tea two to three times a day and double the tea bags to infuse more. Effects will be seen after three months of drinking the teas. According to the Medical Medium Anthony William, “raspberry leaf’s phytochemicals, including antioxidant compounds such as anthocyanins and polyphenols, make it an all-purpose anti-inflammatory, specifically for the reproductive organs.”
Nettle leaf promotes the excretion of wastes through the kidneys, cleansing excess estrogen from the system. It supports the endocrine system and adrenal glands.
Goldenseal
Berberine is one of the main alkaloids found in goldenseal’s root. Goldenseal has broad spectrum antibiotic activity and is effective in stopping bacteria from sticking to cells. Getting rid of LPS and strep bacteria is crucial especially if you have adenomyosis or endo.
Goldenseal should be pulsed for two weeks on, two weeks off. Do not take goldenseal for more than two weeks. If you have adenomyosis, the berberine in goldenseal has been researched as a promising new natural treatment. Alcohol free goldenseal liquid extract can be easier to take than capsules.
Turmeric
Turmeric is anti inflammatory and lowers high estradiol (estrogen). This prevents excess estrogen from inflaming and worsening endometriosis and adenomyosis. Research shows turmeric has pain reducing effects similar to prescription painkillers when taken daily over time. If you have cramps or other pain in addition to heavy periods, I love Gaia’s Turmeric Supreme for Pain.

A new non hormonal treatment (Hydroxylase inhibitors) for heavy menstrual bleeding is coming!
Researchers found that lowered levels of oxygen – known as hypoxia – stimulates production of a protein called HIF-1, which drives repair of the womb lining.
Women with heavy periods had reduced levels of HIF-1 compared with women with normal blood loss, according to new research findings.
